Aboriginal Cultural Heritage

Funder:  NSW – Department of Environment & Heritage

Grant Background: The Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Grant aim to:

  • improve identification, protection, knowledge and understanding of the State’s heritage
  • assist owners and custodians with the conservation and activation of items of State and local heritage significance and Aboriginal Places
  • encourage promotion, celebration and cultural participation of the State’s heritage
  • increase resilience in NSW: recovery from and preparedness for disasters
  • stimulate the economy.

Aboriginal Cultural Heritage provide funding for:

  • Improving knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal cultural heritage by developingheritage management documents for declared Aboriginal Places or, items listed on the State Heritage Register
  • Conserving and protecting declared Aboriginal Places and items of Aboriginal cultural heritage that are listed on the State Heritage Register through heritage works projectswhere the works are:
    • outlined in a heritage management document or
    • address climate change or disaster recovery and preparedness
  • Remediating damage and improving resilience to disasters at other sites of Aboriginal significance that have been adversely affected by natural disasters through targeted heritage works projects
  • Increasing understanding, respect, and celebration of Aboriginal cultural heritage through cultural participation projects.

Indigenous Languages and Arts Programme

Funder:  Federal – Infrastructure

Grant Background: The overarching outcome of the Indigenous Languages and Arts (ILA) Program is to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to express, preserve and maintain their cultures through Indigenous languages and arts activities.

Grant funding allocated through the ILA Program supports three key outcomes:

  • the empowerment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to preserve and teach their culture through languages and arts
  • a strong sense of cultural identity and wellbeing in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, which contributes to sustainable and strong communities
  • celebration and increased recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages and arts in the wider Australian community.

Grant Background: The Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Grants category is for:

  • improving knowledge and understanding of items by developing conservation management documents for Aboriginal cultural heritage nominated for or gazetted as Aboriginal Places or listed on the State Heritage Register
  • doing works within a conservation management document to conserve and protect items of Aboriginal cultural heritage that are gazetted as Aboriginal Places or listed on the State Heritage Register
  • increasing understanding, respect, and celebration of and cultural participation in Aboriginal cultural heritage.

It is anticipated that the grants will help to support connection to Country.
