Grant Background: The Prime Minister’s Prizes for Science are Australia’s most prestigious and highly regarded awards for outstanding achievements in:

  • scientific research
  • research-based innovation
  • excellence in science teaching

The prizes will award up to $750,000 each year for outstanding achievements.

The Science Prizes recognise the achievements and success of Australian scientists and innovators to both Australia and internationally.

There are 5 Science Prizes for science and innovation:

  • Prime Minister’s Prize for Science
  • Prime Minister’s Prize for Innovation
  • Malcolm McIntosh Prize for Physical Scientist of the Year
  • Frank Fenner Prize for Life Scientist of the Year
  • Prize for New Innovators

Women in STEM & Entrepreneurship

Funder:  Federal – Industry

Grant Background: The Women in STEM and Entrepreneurship program supports investment in gender equity initiatives that aim for lasting systemic change by eliminating barriers for women’s participation in STEM education and careers, and entrepreneurship.

The program objectives are to:

  • increase awareness and participation of girls and women in STEM education and careers
  • increase awareness and participation of girls and women in other parts of the innovation ecosystem including innovative businesses, start-ups and entrepreneurial activities and careers
  • stimulate an increase in the number of women in senior leadership and decision making positions in government, research organisations, industry and businesses.

To deliver on the aims of the WISE program, this round will only support projects in these specific focus areas:

  • Information technology
  • Engineering
  • Intersectionality
  • Entrepreneurship

National Science Week Grants

Grant Background: National Science Week is Australia’s major national celebration of the sciences, occurring in August each year. National Science Week 2021 will be held 14-22 August 2021. National Science Week provides the opportunity for community participation in high profile science engagement activities across the nation.

The objectives of the grant opportunity are to:

  • support diverse local organisations and government to work together on science engagement activities that have been adapted to local needs
  • inspire wide community participation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)

National Science Week provides the opportunity to:

  • increase community participation in science engagement activities
  • celebrate and showcase science to the Australian public and the world

Maker Projects: Community STEM Engagement grants

Funder:  Federal – Industry

Grant Background: The Maker Projects: Community STEM Engagement grants aim to foster creativity and inquiry-based learning and support the development of STEM skills in students and youth under 18 years of age in design, engineering and programming, through hands-on learning.

The objectives of the grant opportunity are to:

  • deliver maker projects where students and youth under 18 years of age can develop and apply their STEM knowledge through experimentation, tinkering and hands-on learning by engaging with a range of technologies
  • encourage practical skills, creativity and entrepreneurial thinking through the delivery of hands-on STEM-related events and activities
  • inspire students to pursue STEM disciplines in their study and work
  • ensure that maker projects are accessible to as many young people as possible, including those in regional, rural and disadvantaged areas
  • make a positive sustainable impact on youth under 18 years of age, particularly those from historically under-represented groups, including girls, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, and youth living in regional, rural and remote regions.

Sponsorship Grants for Student Science Engagement and International Competitions

Funder:  Federal – Industry

Grant Background: The objective of the grant opportunity is to support Australian students under the age of 18 to attend or participate in STEM related events, activities and competitions in Australia and overseas.

To be eligible your project must:

  • involve the participation of a student or a group of students at an eligible event
  • have at least $1,000 in eligible expenditure
  • be related to the pursuit of a field of STEM and one that promotes student engagement in STEM-related disciplines, or participation in STEM-based competitions both in Australia and overseas.
